Regional Parties

A party has to fulfill any of the following conditions for recognition as a state party:

  • A party should win minimum three percent of the total number of seats or a minimum of three seats in the Legislative Assembly.
  • A party should win at least one seat in the Lok Sabha for every 25 seats or any fraction thereof allotted to that State.
  • A political party should secure at least six percent of the total valid votes polled during general election to a Lok Sabha or State Legislative Assembly and should, in addition, win at least one Lok Sabha, and two Legislative Assembly seats in that election,
  • Under the liberalized criteria, one more clause that it will be eligible for recognition as state party if it secures 8% or more of the total valid votes polled in the state, addition to one seat in any state.

Aam Aadmi Party

Aam Aadmi Party is an Indian political party, formally launched on 26 November 2012, and is currently the ruling party of the National Capital Territory of Delhi. It came into existence following differences between the activists Arvind Kejriwal and Anna Hazare regarding whether or not to politicise the popular India Against Corruption movement that had been demanding a Jan Lokpal Bill since 2011.

All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam

All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam is an Indian political party in the state of Tamil Nadu and in the union territory of Puducherry. It is currently in power in the state of Tamil Nadu and is the third largest party in the Lok Sabha.

All India Forward Bloc

All India Forward Bloc is a left-wing nationalist political party in India. It emerged as a faction within the Indian National Congress in 1939, led by Subhas Chandra Bose. The party re-established as an independent political party after the independence of India. It has its main stronghold in West Bengal. The party’s current Secretary-General is Debabrata Biswas.

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen

AIMIM is a recognized regional political party based in the Indian state of Telangana, with its head office in the Aghapura Hyderabad, Telangana, India, which has its roots in the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen founded in 1927 in the Hyderabad State of British India. AIMIM has held the Lok Sabha seat for the Hyderabad constituency since 1984.

All India N.R. Congress

AINRC is a regional political party formed by the former Chief Minister of Puducherry, N Rangaswamy in the Indian union territory of Puducherry. He announced the party formation on 7 February 2011 in the party’s head office in Pondicherry as a breakaway from the Indian National Congress. Currently it is part of the National Democratic Alliance led by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.

All India United Democratic Front

AIUDF is a political party active in the Indian state of Assam. The party was founded by Maulana Badruddin Ajmal in 3 October 2005 and at that time, its name was Assam United Democratic Front. It was relaunched as a national party under its current name at a press meet in New Delhi on 2 February 2009, again with the same Badruddin Ajmal as the sole magnate. The party’s headquarter is in Guwahati.

All Jharkhand Students Union

AJSU is a state political party of Jharkhand state, India. AJSU PARTY was founded on June 22, 1986, modelled after All Assam Students Union. The founders of AJSU were disillusioned with the previous political parties of Jharkhand and wanted more militant agitations. Mostly activated in Santhal Pargana.

Asom Gana Parishad

AGP is a state political party in Assam, India. AGP was formed after the historic Assam Accord of 1985 and formally launched at the Golaghat Convention held from 13–14 October, 1985 in Golaghat, that let Prafulla Kumar Mahanta to be elected as the youngest chief minister of the state. AGP has formed government twice from 1985 to 1989 and from 1996 to 2001.

Biju Janata Dal

BJD is a state political party of the Indian state of Odisha led by Naveen Patnaik, the current Chief Minister of Odisha and the son of former Chief minister Biju Patnaik, after whom the party was named. It was founded on 26 December 1997.

Bodoland People’s Front

BPF is a state political party in Assam, India. The party has its headquarters in Kokrajhar Town and currently rules the autonomous region of Bodoland. It is also an ally of Bharatiya Janata Party whose alliance known as NDA formed the Government of Assam in 2016, it is also a member of the regional alliance of North East Democratic Alliance.

Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam

DMDK (National Progressive Dravidian Federation) is a regional political party formed by Tamil film actor Vijayakanth in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, along the lines of the regional Dravidian parties, on 14 September 2005 at Madurai. The party head office is in Koyambedu, Chennai.

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam

DMK is an Indian state political party in the state of Tamil Nadu and Union Territory of Puducherry. It is a Dravidian party founded by C. N. Annadurai in 1949 as a breakaway faction from the Dravidar Kazhagam headed by Periyar E. V. Ramasamy. DMK was headed by M. Karunanidhi from 1969 until his death on 7 August 2018.

Haryana Janhit Congress (BL)

HJC was a state political party in the state of Haryana, India. It was started as a breakaway faction of the Indian National Congress by former Haryana Chief Minister Bhajan Lal in 2007. Later, Lal attempted to form an alliance with the BJP but the alliance did not succeed. Finally, the HJC had to fight election alone. In April 2016, the party merged with Indian National Congress after nine years of separation.

Hill State People’s Democratic Party

HSPDP is a political party of the Indian state of Meghalaya. The president of the party is Mr H.S. Lyngdoh. Its symbol is lion. Currently it is a part of North-East Regional Political Front consisting of political parties of the northeast which has supported the National Democratic Alliance.

Indian National Lok Dal

INLD is a political party in India, in the state of Haryana. INLD was founded in October 1996 as Haryana Lok Dal (Rashtriya) by Choudhary Devi Lal, who served as Deputy Prime Minister of India in the V.P. Singh’s Cabinet and Chief Minister of Haryana twice. His son Om Prakash Chautala is the president.

Indian Union Muslim League

IUML is a political party in India. It is recognized by the Election Commission of India as a State Party in Kerala. IUML was formed in Madras on 10 March 1948. It has had a presence in Parliament from 1952 to the present day. In Kerala, it led the cabinet once under the late C. H. Mohammed Koya, who became the Chief Minister of Kerala in 1978.

Jammu & Kashmir National Conference

JKNC is a state political party in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. Founded by Sheikh Abdullah and Chaudhry Ghulam Abbas in 1932 in the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, the organisation renamed itself to “National Conference” in 1939 in order to represent all the people of the state. It supported the accession of the princely state to India in 1947. Since 1947, the National Conference was in power in Jammu and Kashmir in one form or another till 2002, and again between 2009–2015.

Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party

JKNPP is a state political party in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, India. The party was founded on 23 March 1982 by Prof. Bhim Singh and a few prominent youth political personalities of the time including Jay Mala, former President of the Indian Students Congress. Its aim is to “demolish corruption, communalism, criminalization, drug menace” and to establish a real democracy through ultimate revolution.

Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party

JKPDP is a state political party in Jammu and Kashmir, India. The PDP was headed and founded in 1999 by Mufti Mohammed Sayeed. His daughter, Mehbooba Mufti, succeeded him as party leader and as Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir following his death in January 2016.

Janata Dal (Secular)

JDS is an Indian political party led by former Prime Minister of India, H. D. Deve Gowda. The party is recognized as a State Party in the states of Karnataka and Kerala. It was formed in July 1999 by the split of Janata Dal party. It has a political presence mainly in Karnataka. In Kerala, the party is part of the Left Democratic Front.

Janata Dal (United)

JD(U) is a centre-left Indian political party with political presence mainly in Bihar and Jharkhand. JDU was formed with the merger of the Sharad Yadav faction of the Janata Dal, the Lokshakti Party and the Samta Party on 30 October 2003. Janata Dal (United)’s party mentor and patron is the veteran socialist leader George Fernandes. JD(U) is currently a part of BJP led NDA.

Jharkhand Mukti Morcha

JMM is a state political party in the Indian state of Jharkhand which was founded by Binod Bihari Mahato. It has two seats in the 15th Lok Sabha. Shibu Soren is the president of the JMM. JMM is also an influential political party in the state of Odisha and parts of neighbouring of states.

Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik)

JVM(P) is a state political party in the Indian state of Jharkhand which was founded by former Union Minister and Jharkhand Chief Minister Babulal Marandi. The party’s formation was announced by Marandi at Hazaribagh on 24 September, 2006. Marandi was earlier a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, but he quit in mid-2006 because he felt he was being sidelined in the party.

Kerala Congress (M)

Kerala Congress (M) is a state-level political party in the Indian state of Kerala. It formed in 1979, after splitting from the Kerala Congress. Its leader and chairman is K. M. Mani; its working chairman is P. J. Joseph; and its Deputy chairman is C.F. Thomas.

Lok Janshakti Party

LJP is a state political party in the state of Bihar, India. It is led by Ram Vilas Paswan. The party was formed in 2000 when Paswan split from Janata Dal (United). The party has considerable following amongst Dalits in Bihar. Currently the party is a member of the National Democratic Alliance.

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena

MNS is a nationalist far-right Indian political party based in the state of Maharashtra and operates on the motto of “Sons of the Soil”. It was founded on 9 March 2006 in Mumbai by Raj Thackeray after he left the Shiv Sena party due to differences with his paternal cousin Uddhav Thackeray and to his sidelining by the Shiv Sena in major decisions like distribution of election tickets.

Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party

MGP was Goa’s first ruling party after the end of Portuguese colonial rule in 1961. In the first elections held after India took over the former Portuguese colony, it ascended to power in December 1963 and stayed on, till being ousted from power by defections in early 1979.

Manipur State Congress Party

MSCP is a former political party in the Indian state of Manipur. The party was founded in 1997 by Wahengbam Nipamacha. The party was formed after a group of ministers and legislators, led by former Speaker Nipamacha, broke away from the ruling INC and floated the Party which subsequently formed the next government. MSCP merged back with the Congress with its five party MLAs on 4 April 2014. The last party president was Y. Mani Singh.

Mizo National Front

MNF is a regional political party in Mizoram, India. MNF emerged from the Mizo National Famine Front, which was formed by Pu Laldenga to protest against the inaction of the Indian central government towards the famine situation in the Mizo areas of the Assam state in 1959. MNF won elections and formed state government in Mizoram twice, first under Laldenga (1986–88) and then under Zoramthanga (1998–2008).

Mizoram People’s Conference

Mizoram People’s Conference, a regional political party in Mizoram, India. MPC was formed by Brig Thenphunga Sailo on 17 April 1975. Sailo is the party chairman and was the Chief Minister of Mizoram from 1979 to 1984. Thenphunga was an army officer and then a Human rights Activist before starting his Political Party.

Naga People’s Front

NPF is a regional political party in Nagaland and Manipur, India. It headed the Nagaland government with the Bharatiya Janata Party, as part of the Democratic Alliance of Nagaland since 2003. Dr. Shurhozelie Liezietsu is the president of the party. Till 16 January 2018 Neiphiu Rio, the Lok Sabha member from the lone constituency of Nagaland was the main leader of the party.

National People’s Party

The National People’s Party is a state-level political party in India, though its influence is mostly concentrated in the state of Meghalaya. The party was founded by P A Sangma after his expulsion from the NCP in July 2012.

Pattali Makkal Katchi

PMK is a political party in Tamil Nadu, India, founded by S. Ramadoss in 1989 for the upliftment of Tamil community. Ahead of the 2004 elections, PMK joined the Democratic Progressive Alliance. PMK contested in the 2014 Lok Sabha election in an alliance with Bharatiya Janata Party led NDA.

People’s Party of Arunachal

PPA, a regional political party in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. It was founded in September 1977 by Bakin Pertin Oken Lego and L.Wanglat as president, Vice President and General Secretary of the party. Tomo Riba resigned from PK Thungon government Congress Party and joined PPA as Vice President of the Party. Currently, Kamen Ringu is the Chairman of the party.

Rashtriya Janata Dal

RJD is an Indian political party, based in the northern state of Bihar. The party was founded in 1997 by Lalu Prasad Yadav. In 2008, RJD received the status of recognized national level party following its performance in north-eastern states. RJD was recognized as a national party on 30 July 2010.

Rashtriya Lok Dal

Rashtriya Lok Dal is a political party in India founded in 1996. Chaudhary Ajit Singh is the founder and the president of the party.He is carrying on the political legacy of his father and former Prime Minister of India, Charan Singh and the original Lok Dal.

Rashtriya Lok Samta Party

RLSP is a political party in the Indian State Bihar, founded on 3 March 2013. It had previously existed as the Rashtriya Samta Party, established in 2009 by Upendra Kushwaha and Rambihari Singh and was relaunched as the Rashtriya Lok Samta Party by Upendra Kushwaha.

Revolutionary Socialist Party 

Revolutionary Socialist Party is a political party in India. The party was founded on 19 March 1940 and has its roots in the Bengali liberation movement Anushilan Samiti and the Hindustan Socialist Republican Army. The party got around 0.4% of the votes and three seats in the Lok Sabha elections in 1999 and 2004.

Samajwadi Party

SP founded in 4 October 1992 is a political party in India headquartered in New Delhi. It is a state party based Uttar Pradesh, it describes itself as a democratic socialist party. The Samajwadi Party was one of several parties that emerged when the Janata Dal fragmented into several regional parties. The Samajwadi Party is led by former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Akhilesh Yadav after he was chosen the President by the National Convention held on 1 January 2017.

Shiromani Akali Dal

Akali Dal was formed on 14 December 1920 as a task force of the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee, the Sikh religious body. The Akali Dal considers itself the principal representative of Sikhs. Sardar Sarmukh Singh Chubbal was the first president of a unified proper Akali Dal, but it became popular under Master Tara Singh.

Shiv Sena

Shiv Sena is an Indian far-right regional political party. Its ideology is based on pro-Marathi ideology and Hindu nationalism (Hindutva), founded on 19 June 1966 by Bal Thackeray. The party originally emerged from a movement in Mumbai demanding preferential treatment for Maharashtrians over migrants to the city. It is currently headed by Thackeray’s son, Uddhav Thackeray.

Sikkim Democratic Front

The party was founded by Pawan Kumar Chamling in 1993. It has ruled the Sikkim state since 1994 with Pawan Kumar Chamling as the chief minister. The party consolidated its position sweeping the 1999 and 2004 state elections. In the 2009 assembly election, the party made a clean sweep, winning all 32 seats. It also retained the lone Lok Sabha seat.

Sikkim Krantikari Morcha

SKM is a political party in the Indian state of Sikkim. On February 4, 2013, SKM was established at Soreng, a western city of Sikkim. Bharati Sharma was elected the Working President of SKM who is the first female leader of political party in Sikkim. Prem Singh Tamang alias P.S. In 2017, SKM elected MLA Kunga Nima Lepcha as Acting President of the party and Similarly MP Subba and Navin Karki as Working President.

Telangana Rashtra Samithi

TRS is an Indian regional political party based in Telangana. Founded on 27 April 2001 by K. Chandrashekar Rao, with a single point agenda of creating a separate Telangana state with Hyderabad as its capital. It has been instrumental in carrying forth a sustained agitation for the granting of statehood to Telangana.

Telugu Desam Party

TDP is a regional political party active in the southern states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The party was founded by N.T. Ramarao on 29 March 1982. Since 1995, the party is headed by N. Chandrababu Naidu, the incumbent Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. The party’s headquarters is located at NTR Bhavan in Hyderabad.

United Democratic Party

UDP is a political party recognised in Meghalaya state, India. It was was formed by E.K. Mawlong in the year 1997, with the aim to restore the prestige and glory of the state. Mawlong remained the Chief Minister of Meghalaya till March 2000. It is now led by Donkupar Roy.

YSR Congress Party

YSR Congress Party or Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party is a regional political party in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in India. Currently, its president is Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy, the son of former Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy in 2011.

Samajwadi Janata Party (Rashtriya)

Samajwadi Janata Party (Rashtriya) is an Indian political party founded by Chandra Shekhar, 8th Prime Minister of India in 1990–91, and led by him until his death on July 8, 2007. As of 2012 Kamal Morarka, a former cabinet minister in the union government headed by Chandra Shekhar was the head of the party. The party headquarters were located in New Delhi.
